AACSB vs. ACBSP Accreditation for Online MBA Programs

The two main accreditation standards for business education are governed by the AACSB and the ACBSP. The two boards offer distinct advantages and disadvantages over one another, but what is the directory that offers prospective students with more reliable and trustworthy information? There is no easy way to answer this question. However, it is important to note the fundamental differences between the two educational standards.

Online MBA and the AACSB

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business is an older accreditation board with a history that dates back to 1916. Its founding mission was to advance the quality of business education through quality management and leadership. It currently accredits 596 global member institutions on six different continents as of July 2010.

Online MBA and the ACBSP

The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs is a more modern accreditation board in comparison to the AACSB. It was founded in 1988 and primarily governs American institutions based in the United States. The accreditation strongly leans towards both the learner’s experience and the teacher’s experience, so students can rest assured that member institutions showcase excellent professors with great teaching abilities. Despite its shorter existence, the ACBSP accredits 828 member institutions as of August 2010 with either full accreditation or candidacy for accreditation. The ACBSP also publishes a list of institutions that have been declined accreditation status.

Which Board is Better for My Online MBA?

To determine what board is “better”, the student must first assess where he would like to study. The AACSB leans towards being a much more global accreditation board whereas the ACBSP is primarily rooted in American colleges. Therefore if a student wishes to study in an international college, then he should receive information from the AACSB. The opposite can be said of the ACBSP, which is more dedicated towards students studying in the United States.

Irrespective of the fundamental differences, both accreditation boards require very high standards, so students will receive high quality educations through institutions governed by either board. Students should also note that the quality of the education received is the same in the classroom as it is online. It does not matter if the education is delivered in campus or on the Internet, both the AACSB and the ACBSP accredit an online education with the same educational merits as what a student might receive in the classroom. This means that an online MBA will be as valuable as one received through campus study!
